Prescribed Burning to Resume on Lincoln National Forest’s
Sacramento and Smokey Bear Ranger Districts

ALAMOGORDO, RUIDOSO, CLOUDCROFT, CARLSBAD, NM, March 21, 2015 - For Immediate Release.  Fire officials on the Lincoln National Forest’s Sacramento and Smokey Bear Ranger Districts plan to take advantage of favorable weather and burning conditions during the month of April.

Sacramento Ranger District personnel will focus on the 210-acre Akers Prescribed Fire project, located about 2 miles south of the junction of NM Highways 130 and 24; and 2 miles north of Weed.  A fire information board with maps and project-related information will be located near the highway junction (130 and 24). “Prescribed fire” and “smoke” signs will be posted in the area, as well.

Ignition dates are dependent upon weather conditions. Fire managers will be monitoring conditions closely to ensure that they fall within the ranges that have been identified in the burn plan. Optimal burning conditions must be in place to achieve the desired effects outlined in the burn plan; and will also result in good ventilation and smoke dispersal.

Desired effects include reducing or eliminating fuels (that were generated in recent thinning projects); and reducing piñon and juniper tree density.  This prescribed fire treatment will encourage growth of shrubs and herbaceous cover, which will result in an improved foraging habitat for mule deer.

The area is popular for wildlife and also attracts many hunters during the spring turkey hunting season. Spring burning under optimal weather and fuel conditions needed for the Akers project coincides with hunting season.  Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts may see fire, smoke, fire personnel, and equipment.  Please use caution when traveling or hunting near the project area.  This project is a collaborative effort between the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the Lincoln National Forest.

During ignitions, smoke may be visible from Weed, Sacramento, Mayhill, Piñon, Sunspot, Highway 82, Cloudcroft, and surrounding areas.

Smokey Bear District personnel will be conducting prescribed fire operations in the Cedar Creek area adjacent to the Ranger Station (901 Mechem Drive, Ruidoso).  The 100-acre project will be treated in increments of 20 acres/day.

The Forest Restoration Prescribed Burn project, located at the top of West Mountain, about 5 miles northeast of Capitan, encompasses an area of 800 acres.  Under favorable burning conditions, firefighters plan to treat up to 100 acres/day.

During ignitions on prescribed fire projects, expect smoke to settle into drainages and lower elevations at night.  It usually dissipates by late-morning, as daytime temperatures increase. In the event that smoke is encountered on travel ways, motorists are advised to reduce travel speeds and turn lights on.

Prescribed fire updates for the Lincoln National Forest are posted on http://nmfireinfo.com/

For additional information about prescribed fire projects on the Lincoln National Forest, please call Loretta Benavidez, Public Affairs Officer at 575-434-7290575-430-5546 or email llbenavidez@fs.fed.us
